UNC Asheville at Tennessee Tonight In Baseball

The Bulldog Blog will be attending tonight's baseball game between UNC Asheville and the University of Tennessee. Stay up to date with everything going on in Knoxville at the ball park. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

This will be the 48th game of the season for the Bulldogs, who are currently 15-32 overall. The home-standing Volunteers are 29-23 on the year and will likely start Drew Steckenrider (0-1, 7.20 ERA).

UNC Asheville will most likely go with Drew Spear (3-4, 8.51 ERA).

The Volunteers lead the all-time series between the schools, 19-6. Tennessee is also 16-6 against the Bulldogs in Knoxville. UNC Asheville has won in Knoxville in 1989, 1990, 1998, 2000, 2005 and 2006.

Tennessee won last year's match-up, 13-3.

  1. The Bulldog Blog arrived with the team at Robert M. Lindsay Field around 4:30 p.m. Lots of gray sky with some patches of blue on the horizon. The wind is blowing strong to left field. The field conditions couldn't be nicer, now if the rain will hold off we should have a good game.

  17. Hawn walks to lead off second. Forsythe K's looking. Carter commits an error on tough ball against Duffy to put runners at first and third for the Vols. Thurber pinch hits into an inning-ending double play as the Bulldogs get out of the jam.

  18. The highest drafted player to return to college baseball this season has entered the game in relief. Bryan Morgado, a third round pick of the White Sox is now pitching. Schumer leads off with a single to center. Vaughn sacs Schumer over to second. The first baseman fielded it and threw the ball to the pitcher who was five yards away from the bag. The pitcher then had to throw it the second baseman who was covering first. Officially a 3-1-4 sac bunt. McIntosh strikes out for the second out. Graham goes down swinging and the Bulldog third is over.

  19. Fritts grounds out to lead off the third. Osborne hits a slow roller to Spear on the mound for out number two, Norfolk flies out to right for a 1-2-3 inning for the Vols.

  20. Morgado out of the game, Al Walden in to start the fourth. Zinman walks to lead off the inning. Buch doubles down the leftfield line to give Asheville runners at second and third.

    Sac fly by Carter plates Zinman from third and the Bulldogs lead Tennessee 1-0 in the fourth. Wild pitch by Walden and Buch goes to third. Walden walks Lurie and the Bulldogs have runners at the corner.

    Walden pulled for Crnkovich. Baatz hits a grounder to the shortstop who commits two errors, first slipping and then throwing over the first baseman's head, Buch scores from third and Baatz and Lurie go to second and third. Schumber grounds out second to score Lurie and advance Baatz to third.

    Vaughn walks to put runners at the corners. McIntosh flies out to center to end the frame. The Bulldogs take a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

  21. UT 4th: Liles flies out to right after almost hitting a solo homer to left that just goes foul. Spear walks Polk on four straight pitches. Hawn flies out to right for out No. 2. Forsythe walks on four consecutive pitches. Duffy grounds out to end the inning with a chopper to third.

  22. Graham grounds out to start the fifth. Zinman fouls out to the first baseman after a nine-pitch at bat. Buch singles over the shortstop's head for the fifth hit of the game for the Bulldogs. Carter hits into a fielder's choice to end the inning, Buch out at second.

  23. Asheville pulls Spear in the fifth. He leaves giving up 0 runs on 0 hits with 2 K's and 4 walks. Threw 63 pitches, 32 for strikes.

    Thurber breaks up the no-hitter with a double to right. Ball just went over Vaughn's head in right.

    McLean hits Fritts to give UT runners at first and second. Sac bunt by Osborne advances the runners to second and third with only one out. Norfolk singles to left to drive in Thurber and Fritts. Asheville lead cut to 3-2.

    Liles flies out to right. Throwing error by McLean on a pickoff move to first advances Norfolk to third. Polk singles in Norfolk to tie the game at 3-3. Polk steals second -- good throw by Graham just a better jump by Polk.

    McLean balks, Polk goes to third. McLean strikes out Hawn looking to end the inning.

    Score tied at 3-3 heading into the sixth.

  26. McLean pulled for Tyler Coyle, Graham pulled for Johnny Eaker. Final line for McLean: 3 runs on 3 hits with 1 strikeout. Threw 27 pitches, 18 for strike.

    Vols go 3-up 3-down in the sixth. Tied at 3 heading into the seventh.

  27. Vaughn flies out to deep right-center to lead off the seventh. McIntosh grounds out to short on a great throw by Osborne. Eaker grounds out to third to end the inning.

  28. UT 7th: Fritts flies out to centerfielder Danny Baatz. Osborne singles up the middle for the Vols fourth hit of the game. Cole walks Norfolk to give UT runners at first and second with only one out.

    Liles singles to right on a hit-and-run to score Osborne from second and advance Norfolk to third. Liles steals second, no throw from Eaker. Coyle walks Polk and the bases are loaded.

    Hawn hits an infield single to score a run, Carter does a good job at short from keeping it going into the outfield but the bases are still loaded.

    Coyle pulled for McIntosh. McIntosh goes from second to pitcher, Lurie goes from DH to second, Bulldogs lose DH.

    McIntosh balks before he even attempts a pitch to plate another UT runner. Sac fly by Forsthe scores another Vol and UT holds a 7-3 lead. Double by Duffy drives in a run as the Vols score their fifth run on the frame.

    Thurber triples off the centerfield wall to plate run No. 9 for UT. Fritts strikes out looking for the third out.

    Six runs on five hits by the Vols in the seventh to take a 9-3 lead into the eighth.

  29. Bulldog 8th: Zinman pops up to second for the first out. Buch grounds out to short. Carter lines out to Norfork at second. Bulldogs go down 1-2-3 in the eighth, trail 9-3.

  30. UT 8th: Pinch hitter Cody Stubbs singles to right to lead off the frame. Norfork blasts a homer to left to put the Vols up 11-3 with nobody out. Liles hits a solo shot to left to make it 12-3.

    Pinch hitter Matt Hamaker strikes out for out No. 1. Pinch hitter Cody Grisham singles over the head of Buch at third for UT's fourth hit of the inning. Matt Ramsey lines out to Carter at short for the second out. Duffy strikes out looking to end the eighth.

    Three runs on four hits by the Vols to give them a 12-3 advantage.

    Bulldogs fall 12-3 to the Vols.

    Asheville is now 15-32 on the season while UT improves to 30-23.

    The Bulldogs will host Gardner-Webb this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in their final home series before the Big South Conference tournament. Tennessee will host Alabama as it fights for the eighth spot in the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
