OK, so the thought came to me that we needed to spice this blog thing up a bit and since the academic year is officially over, now seems to be a good time. We are going to test this out for the summer. If you like it, we will keep it for the upcoming school year. (And you guys don't think we work during the summer). Here it is the new and improved BULLDOG BLOG.
Wednesday, May 13
So, I was looking at my calendar this morning and realized today might be the last day I am in the office for the next week and a half. Beginning tomorrow baseball takes center stage here at UNC Asheville.
If we can keep the rain away, The Bulldogs will end their season with three home games against Presbyterian, Thursday through Saturday. All games begin at 3 p.m. at Greenwood Field. Saturday will be Senior Day and by an amazing coincidence Graduation Day, seems appropriate.
Monday will be spent at McCormick Field gearing up for the Big South Baseball Tournament that goes from Tuesday until Saturday. So just when you thought we were basically done for the year, there is plenty to do over the next couple of days. I do hope that you will plan to make it out to Greenwood Field this week. Baseball has had a tough year but the players, especially the seniors would appreciate the support. It is easy to be there when things are going well. Those you love are there when you are struggling. So, please come and show your support.
Also, despite the fact that we will not be playing in next week’s championships. I hope that you will come out to support the tournament. It is the first time Asheville has hosted the baseball championships and we have a reputation of hosting great events. There will be plenty of good baseball, obviously the day games are difficult to get to with work, but come when you can and let the Big South know how great a baseball town Asheville is.

Another academic year finishes today. Today is the final day of exams for all students and graduation will be held on Saturday. This gives us the opportunity to say thank you to all of our seniors who will graduate on Saturday for giving us a chance to watch them perform on the field, court, and track as well as in the classroom over the last four years.
The NCAA released is annual APR numbers last week and UNC Asheville once again came through with good numbers. Our student-athletes have historically done well in the classroom and this year is no exception. We should also thank three people who do not often get recognition nor do they seek it but they certainly deserve it. Rebecca Nelms-Keil, Steve Cornish, and Dr. Herman Holt each are a tremendous asset to our student-athletes. Rebecca is in charge of Student Services, she helps UNC Asheville athletes in a number of ways but one is making certain that student-athletes are getting help if they need it in the classroom. Steve not only is the men’s soccer coach but is also the department’s Director of Academic Services. He works closely with Rebecca to aid student-athletes achieve their goals. Dr. Holt is our Faculty-Athletics Rep. which places him as a liaison between the athletics department and the faculty to be certain students are being treated fairly by both sides.
These three individuals have done another outstanding job providing our student-athletes with the resources they need to be successful and the numbers indicate that they are. There are a lot of people behind the scenes that do a lot of work you never hear about. The student is the one responsible in the end and as they walk across the stage on Saturday, honor them and be thankful to all those who have helped along the way.

Saturday was another great day for junior sprinter Natalie Pearson. Natalie qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the 100 by running a qualifying time of 11.74 at the Orange and Purple Classic that was held at Clemson University.
Pearson has enjoyed an excellent sprint career and will most likely end her career as the fastest Bulldog to ever run at UNC Asheville. However, there’s something special about qualifying for a regional. Natalie has had to battle injuries over the past year but no one has worked harder than her to get well and improve. She came so close to qualifying at the Big South meet and then got the job done on Saturday.
So Bulldog athletics will extend to the end of the month when Natalie competes in the NCAA Regional at North Carolina A&T on May 29-30. Congratulations!!!

Thursday has become anti-blog day. This was not a conscience decision. It just worked out that way. I don’t think we have had a Thursday blog in at least two maybe three weeks. I guess we could keep it that way and just not ever blog on Thursdays. We will have to think about it. I think it’s kind of funny that we have just skipped Thursday altogether.
Well, here we are on another Friday hoping to play baseball tomorrow. Looking out the window, we couldn’t play today. There is a strong chance of thunderstorms tomorrow but it may not come down to whether it rains but how much and for how long it rains. Right now the double header set for 1 p.m. against NC A&T. These are two games, the Bulldogs need to play well and win heading into the final week of the season. Of course, the Dogs need to simply play. If the games tomorrow aren’t played it would be 10 days between games and baseball people hate to go that long between games.
Hopefully, the weather will co-operate and we will get two games in tomorrow. Just so you know, we will be broadcasting the games on uncabulldogs.com. The games are audio only. Brendon Harrington will be making a guest appearance behind the mic.

So the staff retreat made me want to go to the weight room and start a workout program. But, don’t worry, the feeling went away. There was a lot of good information about strength training, stretching, and how to better warm up. I think my problem is that I just don’t like to work out. I see these things and I think yeah that would be great. I know I am out of shape, I would better, I would have more energy. But then it hits me. I just don’t like to do it. I mean I watch a lot of sports. Doesn’t that count for something? Oh well, I fear my problem is not unique. I think a lot of people don’t really like to workout. I guess the fact that I know its benefits and that it would make me feel better in the long run and I still don’t want to do it is my biggest issue.
Oh well enough of that. Last night, was the last night of my VMP 273 class. I taught a class in Sports Broadcasting for the first time. Their final project was to produce a 30 second commercial for UNC Asheville athletics. You will see some of the better ones on the website over the summer as we prepare for 2009-10. The class did very well. Hopefully it is something that can continue and grow.
Things are really starting to slow down. Not as many students on campus. There are places to park. Obviously the construction will be on going but we expect the track to be ready for the start of school which would be huge for our track teams. Stay tuned we will let you know all about it.

Happy Cinco de Mayo. Excuse me, I shouldn’t mix languages. Buena Cinco de Mayo. Don’t worry, that will be all the Spanish until the end. My High School Spanish teacher gave me a “C” so my Spanish is average at best. Anyway, it is staff retreat day here at UNC Asheville. The one day we can wear shorts. Yeah! It used to be you went somewhere for a retreat but with budget cuts we will be on campus, but not in the office which is good.
It is also exam week, so no games this week. Baseball plays North Carolina A&T on Saturday. That is the only action all week. Of course Sunday is Mother’s Day. There are too many events in May. I have three family birthdays, Mother’s Day, Mexican Holidays, and Memorial Day. Then somebody always throws in a baseball tournament just to make sure I have no free time.
Oh well, I shouldn’t complain, at least I like all the things going on this month. I mean I love my family, my Mom, Dos Equis, Memorial Day, and baseball so it works out. Well, if you are celebrating be safe today and I will let you know how the retreat goes.

Congratulations are in order to former UNC Asheville tennis player Nicholas Thuell who recently got a chance to play for Bermuda in Davis Cup action.
Thuell helped lead Bermuda to a second-place finish in the Americas Zone 4 qualifying competition. With Bermuda’s finish, the tiny country moves up Zone 3 for next year. Thuell was an alternate last year and didn’t get a chance to play before making the team this year. He played in the final doubles match of the competition against Panama and his team won in straight sets. Thuell was able to serve out the match with some impressive winners.
No one deserves this kind of success more than Nicholas Thuell. He saw a lot in his career as Thuell played for four different head coaches. However, that didn’t deter him and he served as team captain last year and made the Big South All-Academic team for tennis.
Nicholas was the epitome of what a student-athlete is supposed to be during his time at UNC Asheville. He is currently working on his masters at UNC Greensboro. Nicholas was a first-class young man who will be a success in life no matter what road he chooses.
Congratulations to Nicholas for his success with Bermuda’s Davis Cup team. He is the first Bulldog tennis player to ever compete in the Davis Cup and we couldn’t have had a better representative than him.
