Tuesday, May 12

Another academic year finishes today. Today is the final day of exams for all students and graduation will be held on Saturday. This gives us the opportunity to say thank you to all of our seniors who will graduate on Saturday for giving us a chance to watch them perform on the field, court, and track as well as in the classroom over the last four years.

The NCAA released is annual APR numbers last week and UNC Asheville once again came through with good numbers. Our student-athletes have historically done well in the classroom and this year is no exception. We should also thank three people who do not often get recognition nor do they seek it but they certainly deserve it. Rebecca Nelms-Keil, Steve Cornish, and Dr. Herman Holt each are a tremendous asset to our student-athletes. Rebecca is in charge of Student Services, she helps UNC Asheville athletes in a number of ways but one is making certain that student-athletes are getting help if they need it in the classroom. Steve not only is the men’s soccer coach but is also the department’s Director of Academic Services. He works closely with Rebecca to aid student-athletes achieve their goals. Dr. Holt is our Faculty-Athletics Rep. which places him as a liaison between the athletics department and the faculty to be certain students are being treated fairly by both sides.

These three individuals have done another outstanding job providing our student-athletes with the resources they need to be successful and the numbers indicate that they are. There are a lot of people behind the scenes that do a lot of work you never hear about. The student is the one responsible in the end and as they walk across the stage on Saturday, honor them and be thankful to all those who have helped along the way.

Go Dogs!
